Rubies (Reception & Y1)

Mrs Hall is the class teacher in Rubies. She is supported by Miss Haver, who is a Nursery Nurse and the key worker for children in Nursery, and Mrs Bryan, who is a one-to-one support TA in with Rubies in the afternoon. Mrs Harrison is our Cover Supervisor and teaches the children in Rubies too.

In Rubies, we are expected to always:

  • Work towards our SMIRF targets.
  • Work on Mathletics and Spelling Shed.
  • Read at least 3 times a week (we are working towards our whole school reading target!)
  • Learn our spellings (sent out on a Friday to be tested on the following Friday)
  • Learn to read our High Frequency Words.
  • When your child reads five times, they receive five Dojos- so make sure to fill in their reading record.
  • When your child can read all of the High Frequency Words in a phase, they will receive a certificate.

Early Years

Foundation Stage

  • In the EYFS we use ‘In The Moment Planning’ to respond to the needs and interests of our children. Alongside this, where appropriate, we use elements of the  curriculum we have designed for Year One and Two. We place an emphasis on our curriculum drivers:
  • Our World
  • Collaboration
  • Life Skills
  • Oracy
  • Resilience and Aspirations
  • We have a daily discrete phonics session based on the Read, Write, Inc scheme. We also use the Read, Write Inc reading scheme when the children are ready for reading and this continues into Key Stage One.
  • We also have a Maths input based on the White Rose Maths scheme of learning for EYFS.

In EYFS we follow the "Development Matters", which breaks down children's learning into age bands. On the entry of any child into EYFS, we encourage parents to have a look at the document "What to expect, when" This document breaks down Development Matters into "I Can" statements. (See above)

Supporting Learning at Home

We recently purchased a subscription for Spelling Shed. From Year One at the moment, all children will have a log in sent home to help them learn their spellings by playing online games. The app is £2.99 but the game can be played on a web browser. We also subscribe to Mathletics which can be used at home. (Please see Mrs Hall if you have forgotten your log-ins)

Here is a list of some phonics websites/apps to support your child at home:

http://www.ictgames.com/literacy.html  Can be used on computers and soon to be made available on tablets/ipads.

https://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/  Website is free, just register! You can download the app on phones, tablets and ipads (costs around £4.99).

We have an Oxford Owl page, where your child can access lots of free books to read online, in line with their developing reading skills. The web address is:www.oxfordowl.co.uk
